The Department of Physical Therapy at UT Southwestern Medical Center’s School of Health Professions offers an APTA accredited  residency-based educational opportunity each year beginning in late July. The resident works on a twelve-month employment contract with the University as a Clinical Affiliate. Sports coverage experience is in conjunction with the Dallas Stars, the University of Texas-Dallas athletic department, and various high school affiliations. The resident sees patients in our sports medicine satellite center managed by the physical therapy department faculty. The resident works under the supervision of a designated mentor and the faculty members who see patients in the department’s sports and orthopedic clinics. The Resident maintains an 70% patient load inclusive of time reserved for collaborative care with their mentor. The resident is allotted time for additional learning opportunities such as journal club participation, academic instruction in the undergraduate DPT program, inservice presentation, research projects, physician rounds, poster/platform presentation development, and field and event coverage. The residency format is based on a structured, comprehensive approach to examination and treatment of sports physical therapy patients. The content is based upon the American Physical Therapy Association’s description of advanced sports clinical practice (authored by the program director) and includes didactic, laboratory, and clinical practice components. All content is taught in a 1:1 setting by a sports-certified clinical specialist. At the completion of the residency the resident is fully prepared and qualified to sit for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialty’s Sports Clinical Specialist certification (SCS) examination. Applicants should have at least 6 months of experience in an outpatient orthopedic or sports setting, have licensure or board eligibility to practice physical therapy in the state of Texas, and current emergency responder certification. The salary for this position is commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience. Benefits include a full university benefits package.
